Handicapped woman cruelly murdered

Jacqueline Kingma, 36: mentally-handicapped woman’s face was crushed in…

Brixton Mayfair West Nov 3 2009 – MAYFAIR-WEST - BRIXTON -- 36-year-old mentally and physically handicapped Ms Jacqueline Kingma, 36, who used to work as a packer at the Pick ‘n Pay in Brixton’s Panorama-centre, was murdered by unknown people sometime before noon on Monday, reports Beeld journalist Sanri van Wyk.

Her bloodied body was found by her brother Fanus, 33 at around noon in the parental home of St. Ives- and Indra Street in Mayfair West.  Family member Susan Kingma said that ‘her little face was completely crushed to pieces and her right-eye was bashed in’.

Jacqueline, who lived with her mom Connie, had the habit of walking to the nearby Pick ‘n Pay every day to fetch her brother Fanus at 7pm and then walk home together. “Yesterday, that didn’t happen,’ said Ms Kingma. The story doesn’t say whether Ms Kingma was robbed, and details about the whereabouts of the mother also were not published as yet.

Police inspector Jerbers de Bruyn said the exact circumstances of the murder still are ‘very vague’ and wouldn’t be known until the forensic examination. The Brixton police station investigates the case.

Jacqueline was born with a spinal defect, and suffered from a syndrome which hampered her physical and mental abilities. “She could read, talk and write, but she was always slower than other children,’ said Ms Susan Kingma.

When Fanus arrived at his mother’s home to have lunch at noon, he found his sister’s body in the hallway. The family believes that the murderers must have been known to her because the security gate of the front-door was open. “She must have opened it for her murderers because there are no signs of any forced entry.’ http://www.beeld.com/Content/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/1928/2fa10e77c1a34a2f8feabf60dfdd9b9a/03-11-2009-10-19/Gestremde_in_ma_se_huis_vermoor

Hisham Bhamjee, chairman of the Brixton community policing forum, comprising all the previous working-class Afrikaner areas of Johannesburg, namely Auckland Park, Melville, Rossmore, Mayfair and Crosby, has advised the area's 55,000 residents to be on the alert and to take precautions.

  • "Personally, I would not walk along Kingsway or Henley road [which flank the South African Broadcasting Corporation building in Auckland Park] at night," said Bhamjee.

Crime figures for the greater Brixton area – population 55,000 -- for 2005 and 2006 showed that 20 people were murdered, 527 armed robberies with aggravated circumstances were committed and there were about 680 assaults.

By March 2008-9, these statistics show only a slight drop in the reported numbers of murders and homicides, namely 15, but the number of armed robberies and violent assaults were as high as ever.  http://www.saps.gov.za/statistics/reports/crimestats/2009/provinces/gauteng/pdf/brixton.pdf
